Baton relay route is really good news

EVERY town in East Renfrewshire will welcome the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay this summer — and the southside is the last leg before the opening ceremony.

The relay may be over 6,000km away just now, but on July 16 — exactly one week before the Commonwealth Games begin — the baton will visit Eaglesham, Busby, Clarkston, Giffnock, Thornliebank, Newton Mearns, Uplawmoor, Neilston and Barrhead.

And by July 22, the baton will be in the southside, taking in the Linn, Langside, southside central, Pollokshields and Newlands/Auldburn city wards in the lead-up to the opening ceremony, which takes place the following day.

East Renfrewshire council leader Jim Fletcher commented: “We are so delighted that we will have the baton for an entire day — it will be absolutely fantastic.

“Our sports development, active schools, Eastwood Park Theatre arts and culture staff, the parks department, many of our local businesses and the event team are all pulling together to make sure that this will be a fun day full of celebration to truly remember.”

The Queen’s Baton Relay will take in 69 nations and territories of the Commonwealth, and will arrive in Scotland on Juny 14 following a 248-day journey.

The message placed in it by the queen will be read at the opening ceremony — but meanwhile, you can follow its progress at www.glasgow2014.com/batonrelay.

Residents of Glasgow and East Ren who were nominated to become batonbearers will find out if they’ve been successful by March 31.
