Battlefield, how does your garden grow?

With a new community garden taking shape in Battlefield, southsiders are being invited along to see progress at the David Cargill Community Centre — and to share their thoughts on the finished article.

The new garden will be used by attendees of the community centre — including adults with learning disabilities and the elderly — as well as the wider southside community.

Katie Wilson, from The Square Yard project, told The Extra: “Between Glasgow City Council, the centre itself and other local charities and groups, we’re looking to turn a private space owned by the church across the road into a community garden.

“People will be able to plant things, grow their own veg, or just use the garden to relax in.”

The scout hut which previously stood on the land has been demolished, and the next step is an open day and relaunch on August 29, to which members of the public are invited.

Katie continued: “We’re hoping to gauge the level of interest and to find people who want to be involved, whether that’s being part of the committee and helping to manage, using the garden for leisure or getting involved in planting and growing.

“We’re also keen to have children come and use the garden with their parents, to learn more about what they eat and how things grow, and we’re asking kids to draw their ideal garden, to raise awareness with local families.

“The possibilities are endless — we’re just scratching the surface just now.”
