The tickets for the event sold out in record timing, a testament to how much the local people love the iconic restaurant.

Owner Marco Giannasi said: “The open day is a way of giving thanks to all our customers who have stayed loyal over the years. We have generations of families coming back time and time again.

“I also want to apologise to those that aren’t able to come – there is just no room left! We just didn’t realise we had so many loyal customers.”

Battlefield Rest was built in 1915 as tram station and newsagent.

Described “as the most exotic tram shelter In Scotland”, it became a B-listed building in 1981. A petition signed by more than 1500 people saved it from demolition in 1990.

It was sold to a private businessman Marco Giannasi who in early 1993 started a restoration project to bring the building back to its original state.

In 1994 it was transformed into the restaurant we all know and love today.
