Bearsden author Julia Donaldson is excited to see her play take to the stage at the Tron

A PLAY, based on a novel for teenagers written by Bearsden-based author Julia Donaldson, is going to be performed at The Tron Theatre in Glasgow next month.

Her internationally acclaimed book ‘Running On The Cracks’, which also appeals to adults, will be brought to life on stage by Tron Theatre Company and Pilot Theatre from Wednesday, February 6 to Saturday, February 16.

Mrs Donaldson, who is also the author of the popular Gruffalo books, is thrilled that her book has been transformed into a fast-paced new play.

It follows the story of a young runaway, from London to Glasgow – where she searches for long-lost family connections, and discovers that friendships can develop in the strangest of circumstances.

Leo’s world has been turned upside down. With her parents gone and a creepy uncle becoming too close for comfort, she’s certainly sure of one thing, she must get out. Leo’s on the run. She knows what she’s running from. Problem is, where is she running to?

Mrs Donaldson – pictured – who is also Britain’s Children’s Laureate, said: “I’m very excited about this being performed on stage.

“It’s very realistic, it’s about Glasgow as we know it with scenes at the Barras and Chinatown.

“A lot of action in the book takes place in the Westerton and Knightswood area.

“I walked around these areas a lot in an attempt to trace the main character’s footsteps.”

The cast includes Stephen Clyde, Jessica Henwick, Suni La, Grant McDonald and Gaylie Runciman.

Alongside this co-production with Pilot Theatre – a company known for their creative and innovative work for young people – Tron Participation will be running an exciting range of education and outreach opportunities including a series of workshops, talks, performances and therapeutic drama, including a drama residency (for age 14 years and over) on Monday and Tuesday, February 11 and 12.
