Bearsden’s Lucas (6) smashes charity target in memory of his great gran

Big-hearted Bearsden
youngster Lucas Brownlee (6) took on a charity lockdown
challenge in memory of his much loved great gran – and totally smashed his target.

Lucas has raised more than £1,100 for Alzheimer
research and key workers through a series of fun fitness challenges. The Mosshead
Primary School P2 pupil’s original target was £100.

Mum Pamela Casey said: “Lucas lost his great gran Betty Casey (93) in April from Alzheimer’s. He would visit her at her nursing home with his grandad Graham and was very upset at her passing.

“We were clapping for
carers on the Thursday evening after her death and he said to me, ‘I think I will do a kind thing during lockdown to help people like great-gran’.”

Proud mum Pamela said it was Lucas’ own idea to do a 30-day fitness challenge to raise money.

Pamela added: “We set the target at £100 and told him if he managed to reach it we would buy him a Lego ship he had been asking about. Little did we know he would pass the target so quickly!

“On day one he started with 100 press ups but his dad forgot to press record on the camera so he ended up doing 200!

“Every day we were amazed at his determination. Our neighbours enjoyed watching him over the fence when he was in the garden.

“It really helped us feel we had a sense of community during lockdown. Lucas even managed to include his little brother, Theo (3), into some of the challenges.”

The family uploaded video links on his Virgin fundraising page so his grandparents could view his antics.

Pamela said: “This was a godsend for my mum and dad who would normally see him every day.”

Lucas’ final challenge came at the beginning of the easing of lockdown.

Pamela said: “We invited his gran and grandad round to the garden to watch – at a distance. They were so happy. When he finished, we celebrated with party poppers and Lucas was awarded a very special trophy which his great gran had won in a lawn bowls championship.

“He now has it proudly displayed in his bedroom to remind him of his success and of his great gran who was a wonderful lady.”

Pamela added: “We would also like to thank carers at Edinbarnet Nursing home. They were amazing with my gran, especially in her final days when we couldn’t be with her.”
