Bid to rescue Culter Library

IT MIGHT be a humble little building deep in the Clydesdale countryside but it’s outlasted six British monarchs, 44 Prime Ministers’ terms of office and countless wars...until now.

Mark these last two words as the tiny Culter Library and Reading Room – reputedly the oldest of its kind in Scotland – is now facing the biggest threat to its survival in its 173 years at the heart of the small tightknit community near Biggar.

So old that the inscription above the door carries the ancient spelling of the name of Coulter, the villagers who have, for generations, preserved and run what is understood to be the oldest independent library in the land now face the task of raising thousands of pounds to repair the severe damage done to it during the recent wintry weather.
