Big freeze grips Clydesdale

OVER 20 Clydesdale schools were closed by South Lanarkshire Council on Monday and Tuesday, as snow and freezing temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees wreaked havoc.

Although the big freeze was good news for pupils who enjoyed a day off, it also created nightmare driving conditions.

However, the council's enterprise resources committee chairman Councillor Chris Thompson said: "We have been well prepared and have coped well.

"All major roads in South Lanarkshire have remained open and that is testament to the hard work and skills of the roads operatives who are out in the middle of the night in the worse conditions.

"However, as always it is important to remember the forces of

nature are sometimes simply greater than anything we as a council can bring to bear.

"That's why I'd like to re-emphasise the need for community spirit, so that we all help one another."
