Isobel (93) was nominated by Erskine after volunteering with them for over 20 years.

The former teacher — whose husband was a spitfire pilot during World War Two — has given talks on the importance of the veteran charity and raised almost £20,000 for it.

Mrs Kirkwood dedicated the award to her late husband.

Lucy Wilson, chair of Bighearted Scotland, said: “We encourage people to think about someone — whether it’s a young person, carer, celebrity or entrepreneur — who has touched their hearts and who they think is worthy of an award.

“They deserve credit for their efforts and that’s what our awards are all about.”
