Big-hearted shoppers dig deep for typhoon victims

The club organised a two day collection at Silverburn last weekend for the victims of the Philippines disaster, and showcased a Shelter Box — emergency accommodation used for displaced families across the globe — which they set up within the shopping centre.

Eastwood Rotary spokesman Stephen Malloy told The Extra: “We were delighted when centre manager David Pierotti approached the club and offered us space for fundraising.

“It was tremendously kind and he backed it up with the first donation of the weekend, £500, to set the ball rolling.

“The rest was down to the efforts of local Rotarians and sympathy that shoppers showed for the people so badly affected by the typhoon.

“People were pushing £5, £10, £50 and even £100 notes into our collection buckets - it was quite incredible.

“The funds raised will allow us to make a major contribution to families in the Philippines and we would like to thank Silverburn and the many shoppers for their support.”

Charity fundraising continues at The Avenue, as Costa Coffee has organised a toy appeal for Scottish children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Customers are being asked to donate a new toy to the Newton Mearns store by December 13, and the collection will go to Les Hoey’s annual charity Christmas party, held at Fir Park in Motherwell on December 15.

Centre manager Michelle McCabe said: “Costa’s toy appeal is a great way to help Les cheer up some sick kids this Christmas, and I applaud both Les for his charity work and Costa manager Pauline McCormack for her toy appeal - and for being so supportive of a wonderful event.”
