Big museumcash appeal has paid off

THE multi-million pound project to convert Stephens Garage on Biggar High Street into a new museum is to go ahead, after the community raised enough to buy the buildings complex.

The site had been bought over a year ago by a small group of museum supporters who gave Biggar Museum Trust the option of buying it from them at a total cost of £385,000.

That option would have expired at the end of this month and the site would have been put up for sale on the open market.

In February, Museum Trust chairman James Dawnay launched the fundraising campaign and, in a few short months, local organisations and individuals have come up with a staggering £425,000, making the project possible.
