Biggar and Lesmahagow waste water treatment plants on SEPA blacklist

A PAIR of sewage stations in Clydesdale have been named and shamed by Scotland’s environment watchdog as being among the worst persistent polluters in the nation.

Both Biggar and Lesmahagow treatment plants appeared on the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) special blacklist for having failed their annual inspections TWO years running.

The plants are named in the repeat offenders section of SEPA’s compliance assessment reports, published online for public inspection.

This prompted their operator, ScottishWater, to defend its record of upgrading what it terms as waste water treatment works, while promising to do more to bring all of its 1800 sites up to scratch in the future.

In both cases, the works are meant to screen sewage from their respective towns before it reaches the main waterway through the area, the River Clyde.

Biggar local councillor Hamist Stewart fumed: “It’s ridiculous in this day and age that the sewage services for a town like Biggar are still not up to scratch.”
