Biggar Biodiversity Group to take on first project

On a chilly Saturday, members of Biggar Biodiversity started work on its first willow nursery at Broadfield Farm near Symington.

Part of the Biggar and District Civic Society, the group has been formed to carry out projects that will improve local biodiversity.

The willow project aims to improve the stability of the bank sides of local watercourses, of both the Upper Clyde and Upper Tweed catchments.

“Some species of willow root very easily from small pieces of stem pushed into the earth, and when planted along watercourses the very rapid growing and extensive root system will help bind the bank together,” explained member Jasmine Gould.
