Biggar Museum forges ahead after £2.1 million raised

The success came after its knock-back by the National Lottery’s Heritage Fund in October last year.

Angry but undaunted, Museum Trustees launched a further appeal to local people and have raised the final quarter of a million pounds.

Now, work is starting on the Stephens Garage site on the High Street with the contract going to local builder J&J McCann.

“It is a pretty astonishing thing really,” said Trustees chairman James Dawnay.

“All in all we have rasied £2.1 million, which is amazing.

“I wonder if any other village in Britain could have done the same.”

Moat Park and Gladstone Court, both well-loved venues but not suitable for modern visitors, are to close this year. Gladstone Court will have a last open day on Saturday, April 19, from 11am to 4.30pm.
