Biggar plans a great day out for all the family

The showground, in Edinburgh Road, opens at 8am, with the judging getting underway half an hour later and the judging of the many sheep classes beginning at 9am. With over 600 sheep already registered, that could take some time!

There is plenty for the youngsters, with entertainment in the children’s corner from 11.30am, and the public are invited to fall in behind the Pipe Band for the parade out to the ground from the town centre at noon. And there will be loads to admire or to buy.

“The trade stands are absolutely packed out, and the craft fair is fully booked and oversubscribed!” said this year’s Biggar Farmers’ Club president Callum Wight.

“The food fair is full this year as well - local products and locally produced, that is very much what we have tried to do over the last few years; and even with the commercial outlets on the field we are trying to make sure it is local fare that is available to the general public.”

Livestock classes are booming; sheep classes will be massive, but over 40 cattle and 23 Clydesdale horses have already been registered, with at least 90 horses, and still scope for late entries; dog show entries are taken on the day.

Fun will include a national Tug of War competition, with entries taken on the field, live music outside the beer tent from 4pm (weather permitting!) the children’s games, speed shearing from 7pm, and the show dance from 9pm.

Entry is £10 per adult, £5 concession and children free, for a great family day out. Parking is free and a free courtesy bus runs from Biggar High Street from 10am.
