Brownlie’s, which has been run by Bruce and Donna Morgan for the past nine years, scooped the award thanks to its wide range of craft beers and wines as well as its range of specialist stock.

Bruce and Donna also run very popular beer and wine tasting events and believe their success is a victory for a High Street store which is almost completely run by independent retailers.

Donna said: “We were just going to the ceremony to enjoy the night so to win was quite a surprise.

“We can’t compete with large retailers so we try to offer something different.

“We currently have over 100 craft beers in stock and if someone wants a specialised product they can come to us.

“Every award someone in Biggar gets is a reward for everyone in the town.

“Our shops are about 90 per cent independently owned which is a rarity these days.”
