Biker backs charity

A CHARITY worker from Cumbernauld has just spent an arduous four days touring across Scotland in support of cancer carers.

Ann MacEwan (43), from Carrickstone, was part of an 80-strong group of mainly female bikers, taking part in a fund-raising ride over four days from Kilmarnock to Fort William via Largs, Dunoon, Inveraray and Oban and returning to Glasgow last Monday.

The money raised, currently an estimated £26,000, will go to Macmillan Cancer Care.

Ann said: “Everyone on the run has known someone who has been affected by cancer so that’s why we do it. It’s an impressive site to see so many motor bikes pass through towns.

“We’re still waiting on other sponsorship coming in but last year we raised £55,000 so we’re hoping we can do more this year. “The weather was appalling when we were away, but people are always very interested in what we’re doing and very generous to us. We all loved it.

“It all started out because the organiser lost her best friend to breast cancer. She received lots of care from Macmillan and she wanted to give something back.

“We had a real positive reaction from people on the road and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

The bike ride has become an annual event and Ann is encouraging other women to get involved.
