The community council is looking for talented residents to rally round and take to the stage.

The group had feared this year’s gala could be in trouble after it was left waiting to find out if it had secured vital funding for the event from East Dunbartonshire Council’s jubilee grant scheme.

However, after receiving confirmation it had scooped £1,000 from the local authority last week, the group has confirmed the jubilee gala will go ahead and it is determined to make the event as good as it can be.

Dominic Notarangelo, spokesperson for Bishopbriggs Community Council, said: “We are appealing for local acts to come out and make it a great day.

“You need time to organise a good gala and the uncertainty over funding does impact.

“We want to get residents on board to help. We always want the local community to be involved in the gala as it is a community event, but because we have such a short period of confirmation we need them more than ever to come forward. We will pull it out of the bag.”

The event at the Fort Theatre will include bouncy castles, live music, chess and sports competitions, a street play festival where youngsters can try old-fashioned games such as kerby, and the crowning of the gala queen.

Creative Care at Brackenbrae House will provide refreshments for the jubilee gala day and an overnight campsite for Brownies and Scouts will also be held on the Saturday night (June 2).

A section of Brackenbrae Road will be closed for the gala day.

The council’s grant scheme provides funding for events marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Alistair Crighton, head of legal and democratic services at the council, said: “The closing date for funding applications for events marking the jubilee was May 11. Community councils were informed they would be contacted as soon as possible after that date to advise them of the outcome of their request.”
