Blanket ban? Call for people to have appliances checked in East Dunbartonshire
That’s the message from the council’s Trading Standards team, which is using funding from the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) to carry out annual tests again.
Around 1,000 house fires in the UK every year are caused by faulty electric blankets, resulting in 20 deaths and 250 injuries with older people most at risk.

Testing will be carried out at an approved facility on September 23 with blankets being returned to residents’ homes from September 24 onwards.
For those blankets that fail the testing, Argos vouchers will be provided to help with a replacement.
People living in East Dunbartonshire who wish to have their electric blanket collected from their homes should contact Trading Standards on 0141 574 5772.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “We are extremely grateful to again receive this funding, so that we can keep people safe in their homes this winter.
