Boat Bridge in Thankerton is closed

A BRIDGE in Clydesdale has been closed after being struck by a vehicle.

Boat Bridge, Thankerton, requires major masonry repairs after around 10 metres of the parapet of the bridge was demolished by the collision.

Full assessment of the damage is still being carried out and the C24 Thankerton has been closed from its junction with Covington Road to its junction with Shieldhill Road.

A diversion route is in place, with traffic to the west side of the closure travelling south on A73, east on B7055, north on A702 and B7016, then finally west on Shieldhill Road to complete the route. Traffic on the east side of the closure should proceed vice versa. This diversion route is required due to the height restriction of the railway bridge in Symington.

At this stage it is too soon to say how long the road will remain closed.

Head of South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads and Transportation Services, Gordon Mackay, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this road closure may cause.

“However, the safety of the public is our number one priority.

“I would ask that anyone who is using the area takes note of the restrictions in place, follows the appropriate diversion and leaves extra time for their journey.”
