Bogus caller warning from Busby

@EastRenPolice took to Twitter this week to remind residents to check the ID of anyone cold calling and offering services.

According to chief inspector Angela Carty, CID are investigating a case in which bogus workmen attended a Busby house, claiming work was needed on the roof.

The area commander told The Extra: “We would always warn against taking any work on with people who chap doors cold calling.

“In East Renfrewshire, it’s important to check they are vetted by the council’s trusted trader scheme. It’s always better to get a second opinion and have someone else take a look.

“If you feel uncomfortable at all about someone attending your door, please get in touch with us. You won’t be wasting our time by letting us know, and if they turn out to be bona fide then that’s fine — we often find that they’re quite happy to speak to us in that case, because trusted workmen don’t want bogus callers in the area.”

The incident follows the launch of Police Scotland’s Operation Monarda last month — a nationwide action against doorstep crime.

Key points include ensuring doors and windows are secure, making use of door chains and bars and verifying ID - by telephone if necessary - before allowing someone entry to your home.

Chief superintendent Mark Williams said: “This campaign is about raising awareness. Bogus callers and rogue traders can be extremely convincing and win over the confidence of potential victims.

“If you have any doubts, do not let them into your house.”
