Books of condolence opened to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela

They are available for people to sign at Kirkintilloch Community Hub in William Patrick Library and Bishopbriggs Community Hub in Bishopbriggs Library.

Residents can leave their tributes to the former South African president in the books of condolence until 5pm on Monday, December 16.

East Dunbartonshire Council Provost, Una Walker, said: “East Dunbartonshire, like millions across the world, mourns the loss of a true political and moral icon.

“Nelson Mandela was a beacon of social justice and dedicated his life to bringing freedom, justice and equality to the people of South Africa.

“His selfless struggle cost him years of his own freedom but his vision for peace and democracy for the people of his country prevailed.”

“He was a truly inspiring man who shaped the world we live in today. His legacy will live on and continue to inspire generations to come. He touched lives across the globe and he will never be forgotten.”

A book of condolence is also available to sign in Glasgow City Council Chambers foyer, beneath a plaque commemorating the 30th anniversary of Glasgow awarding Mandela the Freedom of the City.

Mr Mandela will be given a state funeral on Sunday, December 15.
