Braidwood athlete Corey pedalled across Scotland

Corey, who is in Primary 6 at Braidwood Primary School and is a keen athlete, completed the 50-mile ride with his dad Graham.

His brother had also intended to take part, but an injury ruled him out.

Corey has been making great progress with his triathlon and sporting achievements during the last few months and he decided to use his love of cycling to help a wonderful charity.

While competing in the Trailtroopers Obstacle Course in Chatelherault Park in May he met Corinne Hutton, a quadruple amputee. The single mum, who has a son younger than Corey, had her hands and feet amputated in 2013 after contracting septicaemia. Corinne vowed that after getting herself ‘fixed’, she would help others facing similar life-changing physical trauma.

Her friends and family set up a charity, Finding Your Feet, and Corinne herself walked a mile through Glasgow city centre on prosthetic legs to raise awareness of it. Since then she’s completed a 5km assault course, taken skiing lessons, and learned to fly a plane, and in July this year she climbed Ben Nevis.

Corinne, who is currently waiting for a hand transplant, has raised thousands of pounds to help others.

Corey was so inspired by her that he decided to complete the Pedal for Scotland 50 mile Glasgow to Edinburgh Cycle for Finding Your Feet. He set up a Just Giving page with a target of £250, but donations flooded in and he has raised £949.11.

He and his dad completed the mammoth cycle in four-and-a-half hours.

“We are incredibly proud of Corey and his kind and generous outlook,” said mum Elaine.

“Corey trains incredibly hard and has competed in many races this year from duathlons, triathlons, cycle races and also an open water triathlon - he has achieved fantastic results winning several races - the Hamilton Duathlon in March, Lanark Trail Run Duathlon in August and the Helix Duathlon in Falkirk this month.”

Corey was introduced to triathlon by international athlete Shona Girdwood, who has had international success. He is now a member of Fusion Triathlon Club in Glasgow, Law AAC and also the Clydesdale Colts in Chatelherault, and he hopes to become one of the next Brownlee Brothers winning Olympic medals.

“Corey deserves some recognition for this fantastic achievement which will make a big difference to a worthwhile charity,” said Elaine.
