Braidwood war hero Bob Cranston to receive medals 60 years on

A forgotten hero of The Forgotten War is to finally get his campaign medals – sixty years after earning them in combat.

And even now, 80-year-old Carluke veteran Robert ‘Bob’ Cranston has been told that he might have to wait another six months to actually lay his hands on the two medals he won for service back in the early 1950s.

To be fair to the military authorities, Bob DID get awarded his Korean Campaign and United Nations Service medals when he returned from his nine months on the bloody front line in South East Asia but they went missing during his very busy and varied life, including several moves of home, after his two years’ National Service with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers from 1951 to 1953.

However, it has taken over two years for Bob, wife Ann, his family AND local MP Jim Hood to persuade the Ministry of Defence to replace these lost medals.

Bob is delighted to finally have at least an official letter confirming that the medals are finally on their way.
