Breath of fresh air for traffic-choked Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs?

The new system is expected to be up and running by the middle of this month.

It’s hoped it will relieve congestion at four traffic light junctions between Townhead and Gallowhill Road.

The Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique system (SCOOT) detects vehicles at the start of each approach to a controlled junction.

It models the progression of traffic from the detector through the stopline, taking account of any traffic queues.

The information is then used to optimise the signals.

A similar system is being installed at Bishopbriggs Cross.

Fed-up motorists regularly complain about queues of traffic forming in the area because of the phasing of the traffic lights.

The SCOOT system will link up junctions on Kirkintilloch Road, between Brackenbrae Road and Westerhill Road.

The SCOOT system is scheduled to be in operation by the end of January next year.

Bishopbriggs has one of the worst levels of air pollution in Scotland.
