Broadwood was THE place to be

Commonwealth Games mascot Clyde, designed by 12-year-old Beth Gilmour from Cumbernauld, thrilled the youngsters by making an appearance.

Councillor Jim Logue, chairman of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “The event was an overwhelming success and it was great to see so many youngsters and their parents having such a great time.

“Youngsters could try out some of the Commonwealth Games sports, watch experts demonstrate their sporting skills and take part in mini-competitions.

“It’s especially important for the people of Cumbernauld as Commonwealth Games Minister Shona Robinson, chose to launch the 2012 Games for Scotland at Broadwood.”

The fun day was aimed at encouraging more families to get involved in sport - part of the legacy campaign of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Blane Dodds, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “Everyone seemed to be having so much fun and that’s exactly what we aim to achieve: getting more people involved in activities and realising the benefits that brings.”

Mr Dodds thanked Event Scotland, The Scottish Government, North Lanarkshire Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, clubsportnl, Shotts Getting Better Together, Sidekix and local groups and organisations for making the day go so well.
