Building for the future in Seafar

WORK on a new housing development Cumbernauld is set to start in September.

Residents of Fleming Road, in Cumbernauld's Seafar district, celebrated at the start of June when a block of derelict flats at the site were finally demolished.

Sanctuary Cumbernauld, a member of leading UK housing provider the Sanctuary Group, is to begin work on Fleming Road in the coming months.

Consisting of 31 new-build two-bedroom flats, the development will take approximately 12 months to complete and the properties will be made available to local residents to rent.

Artist's impressions show three blocks of modern flats surrounded by landscaped green areas. The new development, which will also include a shop, will be created in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government.

Peter Martin, director of Sanctuary Cumbernauld, said: "The start of these works marks a significant milestone in this project and in our future plans to develop high quality affordable homes across Cumbernauld that meet the long term needs of local residents."

The previous flats had long been an eyesore for residents who complained the derelict block had become a magnet for under-age drinkers and drug users.

Cumbernauld South councillor Danny Carrigan welcomed the development.

He said: "I am delighted with this news.

"The residents have had to put up with a lot over the last few years.

"It was great news when we found out the flats were getting knocked down and new ones were replacing the awful ones we had before.

"It will be a major asset to the environment in Seafar."
