Caitlin takes 90 seconds to make £10,000 for poor youngsters

A FORMER Lenzie Academy pupil answered one question to win a £10,000 cash boost to help orphans and street children in Uganda.

Caitlin Adams was chosen as one of 10 people in the UK to win HSBC’s Student Bursary competition.

Entrants were asked to make a 90 second video, answering the question ‘How would £10,000 help you make your mark on the world?’

Caitlin (19) spent four months in the village of Kitetikka, on the outskirts of Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, from February to June this year, working with the charity Rock Ministries.

Caitlin had the experience of a lifetime helping to teach children and playing with orphans and street children who are taken in and cared for in the poverty-stricken village.

It was the second visit to Uganda for Caitlin, who went last year with a group of people from Woodhill Evangelical Church, in Bishopbriggs, where she is a member. Caitlin’s video attracted lots of votes and impressed judges in the competition.

The former Lenzie Academy pupil said: “When I came back from Uganda I knew straight away I wanted to raise money for Rock Ministries.

“One of my friends said they had seen the competition and said I should give it a go.

“The video is about what I’m going to do with the money.

“I want it to go to refurbishing the dormitories for the children.

“There was a wee girl called Sheeba, who is three-years-old, and she was on the streets.

“We managed to get a sponsor and bring her in. She was really malnourished, but when we brought her in she turned into a different girl.

“My dream is to bring more people into the dorms.”

Caitlin, who is studying theology at the International Christian College in Glasgow, travelled to London to collect her prize.

She added: “I couldn’t believe it when I was told I’d won.

“When I told Rock Ministries all I could here was them singing and dancing in the background.

“I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“I loved going to Uganda. After my degree I want to do a post-graduate in teaching. It’s my dream to teach in Uganda.”
