Call for action after speeding car horror

Alison Timoney and husband Raymond were lucky to escape uninjured after the vehicle flattened a lamp post, somersaulted in the air and landed on its roof just inches from their front window.

The car, which was stolen, is estimated to have been driven at around 80mph.

Now fellow residents, who say the problem of speeding cars is rife in the area, are demanding traffic calming measures be installed, including speed bumps and 
 a chicane .

One woman said: “I live in Hazel Dene and heard this car. My son woke up with a fright.”

She added: “Local 
residents have been complaining about speeding cars along this section of the road, adjacent to a popular park, for years.”

Alison, who was sitting in her living 
room just a few feet away from where the car landed, said: “There have been a number of 
serious incidents in the past with speeding cars ending up in gardens 
around here.

“My nerves are shattered after this . I thought a bomb had gone off. It just shows the damage a speeding car can do.

“The car speeded over a grass verge on to a parkland area before smashing through my hedge.

“That park is usually full of children. I dread to think what would have happened if the accident had happened a couple of hours earlier.

“Something needs to be done before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Ward councillor Alan Moir told the Herald he was 
having discussions with police about residents’ concerns.

He said: “I have been in communication with the 
depute area commander to get a full appraisal. This incident was absolutely reckless 
behaviour. It was a complete disregard of others’ safety and 
property and could have 
resulted in serious injury.

“I have also asked Grace Irvine from East Dunbartonshire Council’s Director of Neighbourhood Services to get back to me 
to see where we can take this.

“The area has a long stretch of road and we need to get a proper appraisal to see what we require to do.”

A police spokesman said inquiries were continuing.
