Calls for probe into Clydesdale’s opencast shortfall

THE clamour is growing for a full investigation into why there just wasn’t enough money set aside to restore Clydesdale’s opencast pits after they had been mined out.

Calls are being made for South Lanarkshire Council to follow the lead of its neighbouring authority, East Ayrshire, which has announced it is holding a full internal investigation into how its area’s restoration shortfall came about.

In our Douglas Valley coalfield, the biggest single concern seems to surround the future of the Broken Cross South opencast site.

A local enviromental activist this week claimed that there was less than HALF the money left in bond by the defunct Scottish Coal Company to restore it.
