Calls for roadworks to be inspected to help pedestrians

Two Scottish charities have called for walkers to be given more consideration when workers are digging up the roads.

Living Streets Scotland and Paths for All, which both champion walking, are campaigning for contractors to be made to place a greater emphasis on pedestrians when blocking pavements during roadworks.

If the two charities’ four-point list of recommendations is adopted by ministers, there would also be a “considerate contractor” register and a centralised hotline for people to call to make a complaint.

If the bid is successful the businesses - including utility companies - would also be forced to pick up the tab for any repairs after the work is inspected by a team of experts.
