Cameronian memories of Lanark...from Kent

ALTHOUGH the Cameronians will be forever remembered as Clydesdale’s ‘own’ regiment, some of the lads who served in its ranks weren’t locals; in fact they weren’t even Scottish.

A timely reminder of this comes courtesy of 85-year-old Frank Stanford who related to us what it felt like to be a 17-year-old Englishman, suddenly finding himself on parade at Lanark’s Winston Barrack’s as a member of one of Scotland’s most famous regiments!

Now a widower living in quiet but active retirement in Sevenoaks, Kent, Frank got in touch after a long-time penpal in Bellshill sent him a copy of the Lanark Gazette, featuring a story about the barracks, now a luxury housing development.

This stirred fond memories which Frank has now shared.

To read his recollections, pick up a copy of this week’s Carluke and Lanark Gazette.
