Campaign to fix courts is a smash

A SIGNIFICANT upgrade of Newlands Park tennis courts will begin next month thanks to funding from Glasgow city council.

In April, a cash injection will permit line painting of the all-weather court and the supply and fixing of line tapes for the blaes courts.

Gregor Summers started the campaign to bring the tired community facility back to life in 2012.

He told The Extra: “I clearly remember the condition the courts were in two years ago. The difference and improvement is positive and noticeable. That’s thanks to the community and the council.

“However, there is still a lot of work to be done. The courts need flattened on a regular basis. That can’t be done without funding so I want to make sure local people get involved and pressure the local authority or an external body.

“I am positive the situation is not standing still, even if it is not improving at the rate I would like.”

The courts are free to use on a 24/7 basis.

A council spokesman said: “The council has been working with the community to improve the condition.

“We carried out a programme of works to help local people make the best use — and encourage further use — of the courts.

“Improvement works have included upgrading the surface of the blaes area and courts two and three, erecting no dogs allowed signage, and renewing the lining of the courts.

“The tennis courts have a significant role to play in the park and we will continue to focus on providing a facility that is of genuine value to the local community.”
