Campaigners welcome playpark move

Residents campaigning for a new playpark in Kirkintilloch for
local children are claiming victory.

Chairman of the Residents’ Association, Tommy Cairney, told the Herald East Dunbartonshire Council has agreed to completely revamp the play area near Parkburn Avenue.

Tommy said: “It’s great news the council are going ahead now with the new playpark which we have been calling for for some time.

“The new facility will cost around £80,000 and will suit children of all ages.”

Originally, builders planning to erect 35 houses on an adjacent sports pitch had agreed to build a new playpark as part of their application.

But the controversial plan has been shelved after the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency raised concerns of a flood risk.

The council told the Herald they hoped to secure funding for the new playpark.

Davie Cullen, Local Neighbourhood Services Manager said: “We do have ambitions of creating a new playpark in Parkburn Avenue.

“Council officers met with the chair of the Residents’ Association. The next step for us will be to consult with the local community as well as Holy Family Primary School, to find out what local people would like to see in the new park.

“The project is, however, dependent on us securing external funding but if this is successful officers will continue to work with local people to make sure the park is everything they wish for.”
