Car theft victim finds it hard to sleep in her home now

Bearsden and Milngavie are being targeted by car thieves

The mum now says she is too scared to sleep in her own house at night and is worried that the criminals may return.

They broke the lock on her living room window last Thursday, October 6 some time between 1am and 6am to take both sets of keys which were on the window ledge.

Then they drove off in her black Audi A4 which had been parked in the driveway.

The woman from the Mains Estate area, who asked not to be named, said: “When I posted this on social media loads of people said it had also happened to them in the past two weeks.

“I just want to warn people to be vigilant as the area seems to be a target just now.

“My partner and I and our wee son were sleeping in our beds when this happened - it’s horrible.

“I’m frightened in case they come back and I’m finding it hard to sleep in my house now.”

She has changed her house locks and hopes that the police may still recover her car which she only bought five months ago.

The police say they have deployed plain clothes and uniformed officers in the area to deal with this recent spate of house break-ins in Bearsden and Milngavie.

Constable Karen Deans said: “These criminals are not stealing any specific make of cars.

“High value ones such as Audis and Range Rovers have been stolen along with Clios.

“There is also no specific hotspot or one street that is being targeted - it’s been happening in different areas of Bearsden and Milngavie.

“We’d remind people to make sure their car keys are kept out of sight - away from windows or doors.

“Also make sure keys cannot be reached, for example by sticking a pole through a letterbox.

“We had one recent incident when car keys were left in the back of the front door lock and the thief reached in to get them.

“Our officers are out collating data about house break-ins at the moment to try to find a pattern.

“We would advise people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

“If you have a house alarm set it when you go out or go to bed at night.

“Leave your house well lit so that it looks as though someone is home.

“And keep your doors and windows locked.”
