Carluke Christmas lights labelled a disgrace

A CARLUKE man thinks that the town’s Christmas decorations quite literally show the town in a very bad light.

Steven Black (49), of Jasmine Way, claims that missing bulbs and tinsel on the South Lanarkshire Council-backed festive displays in Stewart Street and Kirkton Street are “an embarrassment”.

He added: “The state of these decorations is an insult to Carluke.

“They were damaged in 2011 after getting battered by high winds and I can’t believe that they’ve been put up again.

“They are unbelievably bad.

“There is no way I would put them up in my home.

“Not one of the lights in Stewart Street and Kirkton Street works 100 per cent and some are missing totally.”

Head of South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads and Transportation Services, Gordon Mackay, said: “The festive lighting in Carluke was inspected twice prior to the switch-on. All features were lit.

“However, the features in Stewart Street and Kirkton Street are reaching the end of their design life and have some unlit sections. These units were scheduled for replacement in the next financial year.”
