Carluke teenager helps save boys life on holiday

Fifteen-year-old David Mooney, of Castleknowe Gardens, was enjoying the relaxing break in the sunshine of Spain along with the rest his family in the picturesque resort of Sa Coma when the youngster got into trouble in the 9ft deep swimming pool on July 4.

David immediately dived down to the bottom of the pool to get the child, called Reece - who by this time had stopped breathing - and brought him to the surface.

Another holidaymaker took the child from David before a Thomas Cook rep, who was working at the hotel, stepped in and performed First Aid.

The boy finally began breathing again after seven minutes, which must have felt more like seven hours to his rescuers.

David was just glad that the child was OK.

He said: “I heard someone screaming that there was a child at the bottom of the pool so I dived down and tried to get him.

“Because it was quite a deep pool, it took me a couple of attempts to get him out of the water.

“At that time he was a dead weight so it was quite difficult.

“Thankfully, someone grabbed his arm and managed to pull him out before the Thomas Cook rep took over and did a great job.

“It was such a relief when the wee boy started breathing again and started crying.”
