Carluke war hero George Adam returns to Kwai

A CARLUKE war hero is returning to Thailand where he was held for three years as a Prisoner of War.

George Adam (89), is returning to the banks of the River Kwai, thanks to a 3,700 Big Lottery Fund grant.

George was made to work 12 hour days by the Japanese occupiers during the building of the Thai-Burma railway.

Having been captured in Singapore in February 1942 George, originally from Hamilton, spent the remainder of the war working under inhumane conditions with the constant threat of malaria and cholera.

He said: "I'm looking forward to this trip. It will be the third time I have gone back — it feels like part of me is still there.

"It might sound strange but it feels like I am going home."
