Carluke war heroes remembered

Although sharing the same surname, they were related only by the similar horrors that they and their Regiment, the Lanarkshire Yeomanry, endured.

Robert Brown, from Airdrie Road, returned after the war despite the worst of experiences while George Brown, of Braidwood, died in the hell that was the Kinkaseki Copper Mine in Taiwan.

Campbell Thomson, from the Lanarkshire Yeomanry Group, said: “This was the first time for many years that a service of this kind has been held in Lanarkshire but I suspect from the attendance and reaction of those present that it will not be the last.

“We can all learn something from the example set by the amazing men and women who served or were interned in the Far East during WWII. Their courage and sacrifice should not be forgotten.”

Also attending the service was George Adam, of Whiteshaw Drive, who was also a Carluke veteran of the ‘Death Railway.

George was there in memory of his friends who suffered at the hands of the Japanese.
