Carluke woman raises thousands of pounds for the Beatson Hospital

Carluke widow Betty Kerr was able to present a stunning £3250 to the Beatson Hospital last week, following a massively successful coffee morning.

Betty and her daughter Elizabeth Bain, along with family and friends, have been tireless fundraisers for the hospital since Betty’s husband Jim died of cancer in 2005.

They have donated almost £11,000 over the last few years, enabling the hospital to buy much-needed machines and equipment for cancer patients.

Much of the money comes from knitting but, since 2009, the culmination of each year’s fundraising is the coffee morning held on Fair Saturday which is well supported by family, friends and neighbours.

Betty opens her own home to visitors for the coffee morning, and dedicated helpers put in the work on the day. And this year’s event raised £2415.

“It was a great day,” said Betty. “But where all the money comes from, I just don’t know!

“I just can’t believe the way the money comes in.”
