Carluke’s High Mill hits the high notes with RSNO

The musicians set up four groups of instruments – strings, brass, percussion and wind – as in an orchestra, with professionals on hand to give all the children in P5, P6 and P7 the chance to try them out and discover what each instrument did.

“The children went round each group, so they all had a shot in each section, and they knew it was time to change when the trumpets moved round the school playing Star Wars!,” said High Mill head teacher Marion Girdwood.

“They were learning techniques, and were given the chance to experiment and listen to each other, and to hear a professional musician as well.

“They had a brilliant time on the trumpets. The children all enjoyed it.”

She added: “We are trying to develop expressive arts this year, and trying to give the children opportunities that they might not otherwise have.”

Classes have also been to the Tramway Theatre, in Glasgow, recently for an exhibition on the world renowned Turner Prize competition.
