Father of three Sgt David Steele (36) served his country with distinction for 15 years and was involved in tours to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo and Northern Ireland before taking voluntary redundancy last June.

David, who lives in Carnwath, returned to Civvy Street and started his own motoring business.

However, while he was helping a friend at a roofing job in Inverness, David fell 25 feet from a cherrypicker and tragically suffered spinal cord damage.

Wife Lorraine couldn’t believe it when she first heard the news.

She said: “It is unbelievable to think that he was in all these war zones and came home without a scratch and yet he is back home for a year and this happens.

“He is trying to be as upbeat as he possibly can. He is currently working with a physio and is building up his upper body strength.

“When I got the call I was absolutely devastated; I thought that it was a joke.

“But, after what he has come through, I am so proud of him. He is a real inspiration to everyone.”

Lorraine and the rest of the family have started fundraising to help David in his fight to walk again, with a plan to extend their home with a specially-designed bedroom for him.

However, despite help from the council’s social services department, the family will have to raise £30,000 to make that a reality.

The first fundraising night will be on Saturday, January 18, at Carnwath Bowling Club with a charity disco.
