Carnwath’s historic Red Hose Race is cancelled

A CARNWATH event dating back to 1508 – which has only ever been cancelled due to national emergencies like war or local crisis – has been axed this year.

The historic Red Hose Race, recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest foot race in the world, will not be held in its recognised annual slot at Sir John Mann Park this Saturday.

Organiser Angus Lockhart of Lee, who last year presented race champion Haiden Cook with the traditional pair of red stockings, said: “The race will regrettably not take place this year.

“This is due to a lack of potential competitors both this year and in the recent past.”
