Carrying the torch for Cumbernauld

It has emerged that Cumbernauld WILL have no fewer than TEN representatives in the torch relay – after St Maurices’s High School was picked to carry the legendary flame.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is all the more meaningful for the youngsters as they are the sole torchbearers from the town – despite the fact that the eternal flame will make its way through Cumbernauld on June 13.

It is in fact GLASGOW that the youngsters will pound the pavements near that date – as part of National School Sports Week which begins on that same day.

In fact, the school’s participation in that event the year before secured them this coveted slot.

Judges dishing out this coveted honour singled out St Maurice’s as they believed the sports comprehensive best embodied the Olympic spirit.

The school itself picked out the torchbearers and will also be gifted with an Olympic Torch as a keepsake.

Head teacher Laurie Byrne said: “I am thrilled for the school, and especially for the young people chosen to be part of this very special group.”
