Castle Hill landslip...one year on

EXACTLY a year after the need for action was flagged up over land slippage on Lanark’s historic Castle Hill – threatening the bowling club on top of it – things have gone from bad to worse.

The Gazette reported in March 2010 that the thaw following that winter’s weather had caused tons of earth to dislodge and tumble down the gorge at the side of the hill, exposing the iron girders under the hill on which the bowling green sits.

Now recent history has repeated itself, the thaw from the 2011 winter causing yet more slippage, despite “investigations” into the original problems being started by green owners South Lanarkshire Council a year ago.

Apart from some test drilling at the green, no actual work to prevent further slippage has taken place during the year, ironically the one in which Lanark Thistle celebrated its 250th anniversary.
