CBE for North Lanarkshire Council’s chief excecutive

The award was made in recognition of his contribution to local government.

Commenting on his award, Mr Whitefield said: “Over the last 35 years I have been very privileged to have worked in a number of different roles in local government along with many exceptional people. It is therefore extremely humbling to be honoured in this way.

“I am also immensely proud of the progress made by North Lanarkshire Council over the years, which reflects the tremendous commitment of our workforce and elected members.”

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises people from across the UK who have shown outstanding achievement and service to the community. The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) is one of the highest honours the Queen can bestow.

Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “The awarding of the CBE to Gavin Whitefield is a thoroughly deserved honour. He has given outstanding service to the people of North Lanarkshire over many years and he is an example of the best of public service.”

Gavin Whitefield entered local government in 1976, and rose to become director of housing with North Lanarkshire Council in 1996. He was appointed chief executive in April 2000.

Gavin, below, is also clerk to the lieutenancy for Lanarkshire and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and is a past chairman of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (Scotland).

He is married to Grace and they have two daughters. Gavin’s hobbies include five-a-side football and hillwalking.
