Celebrating the true meaning of Easter

The Cracking Open Easter event follows the success of Space Academy and Christmas in the Dark — which attracted 200 people to the Newton Mearns church during the festive period.

The fun takes place on Friday, April 4, at 6.30 and 8.30pm, and will include a meal, music and drama, as well as activities for the children.

Reverend Dr Scott Kirkland is keen to welcome all to the church — whether members of the congregation or otherwise.

He told The Extra: “There will be something for everyone as we crack open Easter together to reveal its real meaning — and explain why it is as relevant to us today as it was over 2,000 years ago.”

There’s a Fairtrade focus for the spring event too, as the church will sell Real Easter Eggs.

Church elder Margo McNicol added: “The Real Easter Egg is a Fairtrade chocolate egg which explains the meaning of Easter.

“By buying a Real Easter Egg, you can help to support the farmers and growers who produce Fairtrade ingredients.

“This allows them to invest in their community by buying everything from school books and solar panels to providing fresh water.”

The focus on Easter will continue at Maxwell Mearns throughout Holy Week, with services at 10.30 am on Palm Sunday (April 13) and Easter Sunday (April 20), as well as services at 7pm on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
