Celebrations at St Agatha’s

St Agatha’s Primary School, in Kirkintilloch, held its annual Feast Day at the beginning of last month.

And this year the traditional event had a special significance as the school is celebrating its 40th Anniversary.

Acting head teacher Paul Manley, school staff and pupils were joined by Father Paul Milarvie, Parish Priest at St Flannan’s, Kirkintilloch, and St John of the Cross, Twechar.

Parents, grandparents, other family members and well-wishers from the respective parish communities also joined in to celebrate mass on the school Feast Day.

The celebration of mass had two special moments: the singing of the hymn to St Agatha, and the enrolement of ten young people from primary 6 in the Pope Francis Faith Award. The award, organised by the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, was first launched a year ago and has been embraced by over 50 Scottish primary schools.

It is designed to help primary 6 and 7 pupils to show “signs of love” in their daily lives and to be active members of their local church.

A school spokesperson said: “During mass Father Paul reminded the school of the importance of the gift of faith in our lives and encouraged the young people from primary six to consider pursuing the parish commendation as part of their commitment to the Pope Francis Award.”

Mr Manley said that it was an important day in the faith life of the school community and was heartened to see so many of the young people of primary six signing up for the Pope Francis Award as part of the school’s on-going commitment and support of Catholic Education.

The school will hold a Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate its 40th anniversary in St Flannan’s Church, in Kirkintilloch, on Monday, June 8, at 7pm.

All former pupils, members of staff and clergy are warmly invited to attend.
