Charity appeals for more people in Uddingston to benefit from service

Contact The Elderly has been organising free monthly tea parties in the village since launching its first group earlier this year.

It is asking those who are 75 and over who live alone, or people who know of someone who would benefit, to get in touch to find out the difference tea, cake and company can make.

The charity is a vital lifeline of friendship for those aged 75 and over who live alone and would like some company.

It is a simple, but effective premise.

Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, guests are collected by volunteer drivers and taken to the sheltered housing complex in Simpsons Court.

South Lanarkshire Council loans the charity the space, but the group is open to anyone living in the area, not just residents.

Janice Kerr, Central Scotland development officer at Contact The Elderly, said: “Sadly the truth is that many older people who live alone today have less opportunity to get out.

“Our free, monthly tea parties offer company and friendship to those who aren’t as able as they used to be.

“If you, or someone you know, might enjoy this then please get in touch.

“It may seem daunting to join a new group but every new member of the group slots in so easily and by the end of the first tea party knows they are among friends.”
