Charity run

KENYAN Linet Masai set a course record of 31 minutes and eight seconds for the women's 10K in Glasgow on Sunday.

But for other competitors it wasn't so much about improving their personal best, as generating money for worthy causes.

It is expected 1 million has been raised for charity from the race and a big chunk of that will come from the southside.

Mums from Carolside ran for the Kieran Mess foundation — a charity which provided assistance for pupil Katy Wymant to increase the quality of her life before her sad death year.

More than 3,000 has been raised by 30 parents and staff who took part.

Morag Cherry (35) from Clarkston is a full-time mum with a very personal connection to the charity.

She told The Extra: "My children were at school with Katy, so just like everybody running here today we were touched by her.

"We wanted to do anything we can to honour her and help the charity which gave her support".

A group of hairdressers and customers from Alison Linich hair company in Stamperland, ran in support of Stobhill hospital where Karen Gilligan (47) was treated in the oncology department 10 years ago.

Despite every intention to run, Mrs Gilligan couldn't take part as she was re-admitted to hospital last week. Alison Linich (43), from Stamperland, was one of the charity runners.

She remarked: "It was such a shame Karen couldn't be with us on the day but that made us all push ourselves even more.

"It was also a very personal triumph as I have lost more than six stone in the run up to the race"

Ellie Grinter (26), from Shawlands, was running in support of a close friend who was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer last year.

Ailsa Howie also took on this challenge to help one of the charities that had supported her most during chemotherapy sessions.

Ellie, Ailsa and 18 others have raised almost 2,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
