Charity shows puppy love to pensioners

A NEW charity is working to lend a helping hand to both pets and the elderly in East Renfrewshire.

Give a Dog a Bone aims to support the elderly population in the community who are struggling to afford to feed their pets by providing a free pet food service.

The organisation will pay for associated rehoming fees and provide ongoing support for pensioners within a five mile radius of G56 who choose to adopt a shelter animal.

East Renfrewshire MP Jim Murphy is delighted by the organisation recently gaining charity status.

He told The Extra: “It is great to see Give a Dog a Bone helping to mitigate the costs of keeping pets by providing free pet food services for the elderly.

Pets can be a great companion as we get older and this is a great initiative.”

Founder Louise Russell commented: “Pets can have a positive effect on the well being of the elderly.

“We care about the rising number of animals in shelters and about loneliness in old age. Please get in touch if you know someone who is willing to bring a loving companion into their home.”
